MySpace: 45 million members in just over two years!
The following is a synopsis of the origins of MySpace from WikiPedia used under the GNU license:
Previous usage of the MySpace.com domain
Prior to the creation of the current social networking website, the MySpace.com domain name was registered to an online storage and file-sharing firm. Registration was free and users were able to obtain a small disk quota which would gradually increase if they referred new members to the site. Due to slow service and a lack of revenue, the site shut down in 2001 [2].
Ownership of MySpace
The current MySpace service was founded in July 2003 by Tom Anderson, the current president, Chris DeWolfe, the current CEO, and a small team of programmers. It was partially owned by Intermix Media, which was bought in July 2005 for $580 million by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and other media enterprises) [3].

Myspace has been in the news quite a bit lately, and for good reason. It has grown into a massive online phenomenon in just a little over 2 years. Take a look at this traffic graph and you can see its meteoric rise from absolute obscurity to Web powerhouse, ranking as one of the 10 most popular sites on the planet.
No, that's not a typo. Myspace.com is ranked inside the top 10 sites globally.
